Update on the Game Animal Council (Herds of Special Interest) Amendment Bill
We would once again like to thank the sector for coming together, raising awareness, and submitting on the GAC (HOSI) Amendment Bill. This is a significant opportunity to establish a legislative framework that recognises valued introduced game animal herds, in a way that benefits both hunting and conservation.
The Bill seeks to clarify the law, to enable the Minister for Hunting and Fishing to establish a Herd of Special Interest (HOSI) in a national park and therefore exempt the herd from extermination or eradication requirements under conservation legislation.
What you need to know:
- Nearly 3,000 submissions were made on the Bill. These have been loaded to the Parliament website here.
- From Thursday 14 August, the Environment Select Committee will be hearing submissions on the Bill. You can watch the submissions live, or later here.
- The GAC is currently confirming the date/time that we will be scheduled to present to the Environment Select Committee. We will share our oral submission on our channels.
- Read our submission on the GAC (HOSI) Amendment Bill here (PDF File).
For those of you presenting an oral submission to the Select Committee, please reach out if you would like to chat through the process. We are running a webinar for hunting sector leaders on the Select Committee Process and what to expect.
